Introduction to the Basic Principles of Fuzzy Set Theory and some of its Applications

Etienne E. Kerre (Ed.)

Nowadays the scientific community widely recognizes the need for formal models to represent and to manipulate imprecise and uncertain information in a positive manner. At the same time the incapability of the classical mathematical models to render a satisfactory solution to these problems is generally accepted. Moreover the monopoly position of probability theory to treat every kind of uncertainty became questionable. As a consequence, the scientific literature of the past two decennia offers a variety of new models and techniques to describe and to transfer imprecision and uncertainty. Undoubtedly the most developed one is the theory of fuzzy sets that started in 1965 by the innovation paper of L. Zadeh entitled "Fuzzy Sets".

Since then fuzzy set theory is infiltrating in almost all branches of pure mathematics based on classical set theory. Even more impressive is the diversity of domains of application of this promising new theory. Last but not least, during the past two years the fuzzy set community has been pleasantly surprised by an overwhelming gulf of practical applications of fuzzy set theory realized by Japanese researchers. Up to now already more than 2000 patents have been taken out by more than 50 Japanese industrial companies for new products using fuzzy logic. This book contributes to the further dissemination of this promising new theory.
