About Progress (struggle and harmony)
8 A second remark is that the idea of progress neglects the distinction between Prosperity and Well-being. Greater prosperity is often accompanied by a decline in well-being. The classic example is the development of chickens. Never before have there been so many chickens in the world: illustration of the prosperity of the "species". Their welfare of the individual chickens has never been so bad (see the living conditions of industrially bred chickens...). |
