5. Causes and risk
Both are progressive and have no cure, but the underlying mechanisms differ:
• Parkinson's → mainly dopamine deficiency due to cell loss.
• Alzheimer's → protein breakdown disorder (amyloid and tau).
Risk factors for both are advanced age and heredity (in a small percentage). In Parkinson's, exposure to pesticides or trauma also play a role; in Alzheimer's more vascular factors (high blood pressure, diabetes).
