Halverwege volgt de raket een ballistische boog die volledig buiten het conventionele luchtverdedigingsbereik ligt. De vlucht eindigt in de terminale fase. De raket komt steil terug in de atmosfeer met hypersonische snelheid en maakt een bijna verticale afdaling op het doel. Atmosferische wrijving veroorzaakt extreme thermische belasting en vormt een plasmamantel rond de raket, wat de radarstabiliteit vermindert en vuurleidingsoplossingen bemoeilijkt. De snelheid blijft stevig in het hypersonische regime, terwijl de invalgeometrie instort. De dreiging doorkruist niet het verdedigde luchtruim. Het doorboort het.
